Michael Ivey was a writer, photojournalist and whitewater river runner when hired for his first film job, rowing the IMAX camera raft down West Virginia’s, class VI, Gauley River on a 16-day shoot. The project’s producer was so impressed with his people skills and intuitive understanding of film production that she urged him to come to Los Angeles. Ivey moved to LA and worked his way up from sweeping stages and fetching cappuccinos. Thanks to his “contagious” enthusiasm, he quickly climbed the art department ladder… PA, Leadman, On-Set Dresser, Rigging & Effects Specialist, Property Master & Builder, Set Decorator, Art Director and Production Designer. He has also shot stills on numerous projects. His experience covers the complete range of film work, from documentaries and features to working on hundreds of national and international commercial spots. Michael credits many of the directors he has worked with as his influences but none more than 2 time DGA Best Commercial Director award winner, Robert Lieberman. “I spent more than 3 years as a key on Rob’s creative team, working on everything from Hallmark to Toyota spots,” said Ivey. “I say give credit where it’s due. I picked up a lot of my problem solving ability, as well as, my overall approach and aesthetic from working with Rob … Rob is a master craftsman.” Ivey sees the world with a unique vision that is supported by his talent as a keen “cultural observer.” Michael’s natural ability to bring “real people” to honest and touching performances is only overshadowed by his fresh ideas and grace as a storyteller. Michael Ivey, the storyteller, is a frequent commentator and reporter on National Public Radio’s, “All Things Considered.” (To hear Michael’s recent commentaries go to www.npr.org) Michael’s still photography has been widely published and exhibited.
